Every year in November the National Book Awards are held in the New York City, United States. Based on literature published during the year and are divided into American authors are awarded for their achievements in the following categories: non-fiction, fiction, young people’s literature and poetry.Dissertation writing on this topic should also include the National Book Awards for lifetime achievements.
In order to qualify for any of these awards an authors work must be submitted by a publishing house. There is a five member panel of judges that oversees the nominations submitted to each category, after which twenty finalists are selected. An announcement of the names of the five finalists picked in each category is made in October. The following month the winners names; from each group, are announced at the organizations annual Book Awards Ceremony and Dinner. The award includes a Bronze sculpture and a $10,000 cheque.
The winners of the 2010 National Book Awards are Patti Smith in the non-fiction category for her publication Just Kids; Jaimy Gordon awarded in the fiction category for her book Lord of Misrule; Kathryn Eskrine was warded in the Young people’s literature category for her book Mocking Bird and the poetry award was given to Terrance Hayes for Lighthead.
